Quick Friday Night Post - Happies and Crappies

I found this blog hop via Your Doctor's Wife and thought it was a great idea for quickly highlighting the good (most things) and the bad (very little) in my life at the moment.

The Vintage Modern Wife: Happies and Crappies Link Up

Happies:

-  Being a senior on the consult service, which lets me spend most of my days teaching med students (keen, intelligent med students) and exposes me to all kinds of interesting pathology.  In this week alone I've seen sarcoidosis, fibromuscular dysplasia, a brachial plexopathy, dilantin toxicity, and other interesting things that are slipping my mind at the moment.  It's like all of the rare and wonderful things from med school have decided to appear in my local emergency room all at once.
-  Having a belly full of steak, veggies, and a newly discovered tasty Argentinian Malbec.
-  Saturday afternoon photography lessons.
-  Three consecutive weekends off.
-  Being pimped by the consult service attending on three random physical exams this week and getting told that they were "a clear pass", "excellent", and "outstanding".  Apparently my physical exam prep group is starting to pay off.

Crappies:

-  A high of -20 C (-4 F) for the next week.  Please send more soup recipes.
-  An apartment that is horribly cluttered with multiple piles of chaos (mostly books).  I think tomorrow morning is going to be devoted to an attempt to bring order to my home.  Or maybe sleep.
-  Still not being able to see my bff who moved back to the city three weeks ago because she and I seem to have alternating call schedules.
-  Laundry.  Again.  Where does it all come from?

Huh...apparently there are far more "happies" than "crappies" in my life at the moment, as I can think of at least five more things to add to my "happies" list, but I can't think of anything else significant to add to my "crappies" list.  (And clearly I have a low threshold, given that I included laundry in my "crappies" list.)  This is a very, very good thing.  Looks like the funk is starting to clear.

Wishing everyone reading this a great weekend, whether it finds you enjoying time off or slogging through a long call shift.

So glad that the happies are outdistancing the crappies!

Hope you enjoy your respite and rejuv your batteries! See your bff, eat soup, read, relax, and yes, sleep.

Have a great weekend :)

Which malbec? Those from Mendoza are the best!

I feel like I hardly ever get to do laundry. Maybe it's because I have a brand-new washing machine I want to use?

Mama D - Me too! It's a nice feeling that will (hopefully) stick around for a while.

AD2B - Will do. You too.

NOLA - It's called Altivo Barrel Selection 2009 Malbec, and it is in fact from Mendoza. I have really only started drinking wine regularly over the last year or so (after my parents tried for decades to get me to drink it), so my knowledge of wine is very poor. I have about six wines that I drink regularly (two pinot grigios, one white blend, one shiraz, and two cabernet-shiraz blends, all of which are from Italy or Australia), and I'm trying to expand my selection to include some different types of grapes and regions of the world. I now have a Malbec that I like! Any suggestions for others?

I am spending this winter in Vancouver. If it makes you feel better, cold+rain is worse than cold+snow in my opinion, and you can compound that with the chaos that ensues when nobody know how to drive in the snow (yes, Vancouver drivers, when your tires start to slip, the solution is to press on the gas HARDER! Not.)

My new favourite soup recipe: http://www.thenourishinggourmet.com/2009/03/garlicky-white-bean-soup-with-dark-greens.html

The recipe makes a giant pot. It freezes well, and you can modify it easily by throwing in carrots or leeks or whatever you might have sitting around.

Yay! So happy you're starting to feel better!
Malbec??? Love it!

Mmm, Malbec! My favorite.

Here's another recipe for soup I enjoy, and it's a summer soup. Maybe it will warm you up.

I grow sorrel, but you can substitute it with any green. I have used arugula and kale in the past.

Soup recipe!! This is my favorite one right now...

Tomato Tortilla Soup
Serves 4

2 (7-inch) corn or flour tortillas, cut into 1/4-inch strips
1 1/2 tbsp olive oil
1 ripe avocado
1 yellow onion, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 (14.5-ounce) cans diced tomatoes with green chiles, including juice
1 cup tomato salsa, hot or mild
1 1/2 cups home-cooked dark red kidney beans, or 1 (15-ounce) can, drained and rinsed
1 cup fresh or frozen corn kernels
1 1/2 tsp chili powder
1/2 tsp ground cumin
1/2 tsp smoked paprika
3 cups vegetable broth
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
3 tbsp chopped fresh cilantro

Preheat the oven to 400. Oil a baking sheet. Toss the tortilla strips and 1 tbsp of the oil into a bowl to coat the tortillas. Spread the tortilla strips on the prepared baking sheet and bake until crisp, turning once, about 4 minutes per side. Remove from the oven and set aside. Halve the pit and the avocado, spoon out the flesh, and dice. Set aside.

Heat the remaining 1/2 tbsp oil in a large pot. Add the onion and garlic. Cover, and cook until softened, 5 minutes. Add the tomatoes, salsa, kidney beans, corn, chili powder, cumin, and paprika. Stir in the vegetable broth and season to taste with salt and pepper. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to medium and simmer to blend the flavors, about 10-15 minutes. Stir in the cilantro. Ladle the soup into bowls and serve hot topped with the reserved tortilla strips and avocado.

This IS a really fun bloghop idea. So glad you're feeling more "happy" and less "crappy" these days... enjoy the Malbec, photography, and free weekends!

I meant to send you this link last time, but:
http://www.cookincanuck.com/2011/11/hearty-chicken-stew-with-butternut-squash-quinoa-recipe/

It's a super-delicious, flavorful stew that got me through at least 2 weeks of my surgery rotation... it's so filling!

Well, the laundry is a temporary crappie... after all, at the end, the house smells like clean laundry. :)
